This article proposes a framework for the analysis of experienced discrimination in home mortgages. It addresses the problem of home mortgage lending discrimination in one of the richest areas of northern Italy. Employees of a local hospital were interviewed to study their perception of discriminatory behavior related to home financing. The analysis follows two steps. The first evaluates self-selection and the second focuses on the likelihood that applications are accepted by the bank. Findings show that discrimination is likely to appear (...) when the applicant’s nationality is considered. In addition to its findings, the study provides an original econometric model on a two-step procedure to test perceived discrimination and suggests a method and approach that may constitute a point of reference for those willing to study perceived discrimination. Objective Compare outcome of dogs that did and did not receive fresh frozen plasma (FFP) for treatment of pancreatitis. Design Retrospective case series between 1995 and 2005. Setting University referral hospital. Animals Seventy-four dogs were enrolled with a total of 77 Cases as 2 dogs had repeat episodes of pancreatitis. Diagnosis of pancreatitis was based on clinical signs, physical examination, and abdominal ultrasonographic examination. Interventions The medical database was searched for dogs with a diagnosis of pancreatitis. Information collected included signalment, (...) vital signs, CBC, use of FFP, length of stay, use of antimicrobials and supplemental nutrition, surgical intervention, preexisting illness, evidence of a coagulopathy and outcome. Outcome was compared between those patients that did and did not receive FFP. Measurements and Main Results Fifty-nine dogs survived to discharge. Two dogs with repeat pancreatitis survived to discharge after each episode. Thirteen dogs died and 2 were euthanized. FFP was administered to 20 dogs. Two dogs that were hospitalized for repeat pancreatitis did not receive FFP. Seven of 20 (35%) cases that received plasma died or were euthanized compared with 6 of 57 (12%) cases that did not receive plasma. Plasma administration was significantly related to outcome (P<0.001). Severity of illness scores were difficult to assign, however, dogs meeting criteria for systemic inflammatory response syndrome were not more likely to receive FFP. Other therapies included supplemental nutrition, antimicrobials, and surgical intervention, which did not affect outcome. Conclusions Mortality rate for those dogs receiving plasma was higher than those that did not. Severity of illness scores were difficult to assign; however, preexisting illness, evidence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome, and presence of a coagulopathy were not significantly different between the groups that did and did not receive FFP. No benefit for administration of FFP was noted. Additional investigation should be performed to confirm this result. 2009 Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. (shrink)

This chapter introduces the idea that computation is a key tool that can help us understand how the human brain works. Recent years have seen a revolution in the kinds of tasks computers can perform. Underlying these advances is the burgeoning field of machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, which aims at creating machines that can act without being programmed, learning from data and experience. Rather startlingly, it turns out that the same methods that allow us to make intelligent (...) machines also appear to hold the key to explaining how our brains work. In this chapter, we explore this exciting new field and some of the questions that it raises. (shrink)

Enūma eliš exhibits a masterful array of intertextual borrowings that makes it exceptional among Akkadian literary texts. In this paper I discuss “intertextu- ity” as an analytical category and its suitability and limitations for the study of ancient compositions. I consider three different levels of intertextuality and present instances from an assorted group of texts. I finally show how a variety of intertextual types that are usually found in isolation are combined in Enūma eliš to create an original piece.

The text commonly known as the Babylonian Poem of Creation has attracted scholarly attention since it was first translated in the late nineteenth century, although critical editions have appeared only recently. In 2014 there was published a lengthy study on enūma eliš that presents a number of original approaches to the ancient composition. This new book is the subject of the following notes.

According to a growing trend in theoretical neuroscience, the human perceptual system is akin to a Bayesian machine. The aim of this article is to clearly articulate the claims that perception can be considered Bayesian inference and that the brain can be considered a Bayesian machine, some of the epistemological challenges to these claims; and some of the implications of these claims. We address two questions: (i) How are Bayesian models used in theoretical neuroscience? (ii) From the use of Bayesian (...) models in theoretical neuroscience, have we learned or can we hope to learn that perception is Bayesian inference or that the brain is a Bayesian machine? From actual practice in theoretical neuroscience, we argue for three claims. First, currently Bayesian models do not provide mechanistic explanations; instead they are useful devices for predicting and systematizing observational statements about people's performances in a variety of perceptual tasks. That is, currently we should have an instrumentalist attitude towards Bayesian models in neuroscience. Second, the inference typically drawn from Bayesian behavioural performance in a variety of perceptual tasks to underlying Bayesian mechanisms should be understood within the three-level framework laid out by David Marr ( [1982] ). Third, we can hope to learn that perception is Bayesian inference or that the brain is a Bayesian machine to the extent that Bayesian models will prove successful in yielding secure and informative predictions of both subjects' perceptual performance and features of the underlying neural mechanisms. Tulisan-tulisan ini semua mengangkat, dari pelbagai segi dan dengan cara-cara yang berbeda, tantangan-tantangan bagi umat Katolik yang berasal dari kenyataan bahwa umat Katolik adalah minoritas kecil dalam suatu bangsa yang amat majemuk. Atau, lebih tepat, dari kenya- taan bahwa saat ini kebhinekaan dan toleransi mengalami “ujian berat.” Tulisan-tulisan ini dibagi tiga.............................................................. Tiga tulisan terakhir kembali membahas kehadiran Gereja (Katolik) (...) di ruang publik. Sesudah berfokus pada bagaimana Gereja dalam lima abad pertamanya memastikan identitasnya dalam lingkungan budaya yang asing, Antonius Denny Firmatno, dengan meloncat 1400 tahun, me- nunjuk bagaimana Gereja pasca Vatikan II makin sadar bahwa ia berada di ruang publik, maka bahwa sangat penting Gereja memperlihatkan diri sesuai dengan identitasnya yang sebenarnya. Raymundus I Made Sudhiarsa membahas kecenderungan berbahaya agama-gama, termasuk Gereja, untuk mau mengamankan identitas mereka dengan menutup diri terhadap dunia luar. Tulisan bagus dan mendalam ini membahas hal identitas dan “parokialisme” (suatu catatan: sebenarnya istilah “parokialisme” tidak mengenai sikap teologis-ideologis-fanatik dsb., me- lainkan mengenai keterbatasan wawasan “alami,” jadi barangkali lebih baik diganti dengan “ketertutupan” saja), mekanisme kambing hitam serta penolakan terhadap perbedaan, perlunya bergerak dari alienasi ke kola- borasi. Pius Pandor menutup kumpulan tulisan ini dengan berfokus pada patologi ruang publik yang cenderung mendorong agama-agama ke arah fundamentalisme dan pembenaran kekerasan daripada membangun dialog dan toleransi. Kekuatan buku ini adalah kekayaan dan komplek- sitas sudut-sudut yang terangkat dalam membahas tantangan-tantangan yang harus dihadapi Gereja sebagai partisipan di ruang publik, serta bahwa pembaca dirangsang untuk berpikir sendiri (Franz Magnis- Suseno, Guru Besar Ilmu Filsafat Emeritus, Sekolah Tinggi Filsafat Driyarkara, Jakarta). Buku kedua suntingan Raymundus Sudhiarsa dan Paulinus Yan Olla (2015) memuat duapuluh tulisan — sumbangan dosen-dosen STFT Widya Sasana pada hari Studi 2015 — yang berfokus pada dua dokumen tulisan kunci Paus Fransiskus: “Evangelii Gaudium” (2013) dan “Misericodiae Vultus” (2015). Hari Studi itu mengangkat pertanyaan bagaimana menjawab tantangan agar Gereja Indonesia menjadi “gem- bira dan berbelaskasih.” Tulisan-tulisan ini dibagi dalam empat kelom- pok: Tinjauan historis, tinjauan biblis, tinjauan filosofis dan sosio-kultural, dan tinjauan teologis-pastoral, disusul penutup. Saya membatasi diri pada beberapa (...) catatan saja. Dari empat tulisan “tinjauan historis” yang langsung sangat menarik adalah tulisan pertama (oleh Edison R. L. Tinambunan) tentang kenyataan bahwa kristianitas telah sampai ke Sumatra lebih dari seribu tahun lalu, dan dibawa terutama oleh kaum awam. Cukup menarik apa yang kemudian ditulis oleh Armada Riyanto tentang dua penulis sejarah Gereja Indonesia, Martinus Muskens dan Karel Steenbrink, disusul tulisan tentang Gereja di zaman pendudukan Jepang. Apa yang ditulis oleh Kristoforus Bala tentang peran devosi pada Ibu Maria dalam evangelisasi di Nusa Tenggara bagi banyak pembaca Indonesia barangkali masih baru. Dari empat tulisan “tinjauan biblis-teologis” dua mengenai Perjanjian Lama......................................................................... Dari tiga tulisan penutup yang pertama, dari Merry Teresa Sri Rejeki, menjelaskan dua dokumen yang menjadi fokus tulisan-tulisan jilid ini: “Evangelii Gaudium” dan “Misericordiae Vultus.” Seberikutnya Piet Go menjelaskan secara skematis mengapa iman Gerejani perlu “bergembira” dan “berbelas-kasih.” Buku ditutup dengan “Sukacitaku,” puisi St. Teresia dari Kanak-kanak Yesus. Sebagai kesimpulan: buku ini — meskipun ada beberapa kelemahan, terutama uraian-uraian teoretis yang agak berlebihan dan absennya perhatian pada sekian kontroversi baik dalam masyarakat maupun dalam Gereja berkaitan dengan hal- hal yang dibahas — amat kaya, mencerahkan dan bisa memperdalam pengertian tentang iman Gereja serta betapa penting dan perlu Gereja Indonesia mengikuti ajakan Paus Fransiskus untuk memancarkan kegembiraan dan belaskasihan Ilahi ke dalam masyarakat (Franz Magnis- Suseno, Guru Besar Ilmu Filsafat Emeritus, Sekolah Tinggi Filsafat Driyarkara, Jakarta). In this paper, Taylor series is used to solve neutrosophic multi-objective programming problem (NMOPP). In the proposed approach, the truth membership, Indeterminacy membership, falsity membership functions associated with each objective of multi-objective programming problems are transformed into a single objective linear programming problem by using a first order Taylor polynomial series. Finally, to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method, a numerical experiment for supplier selection is given as an application of Taylor series method for solving neutrosophic multi-objective programming problem (...) at end of this paper. A notion of experimental series is developed, in which experiments or experimental sets are connected through experimental suggestions arising from previous experimental outcomes. To that end, the justification of Howard Temin’s DNA provirus hypothesis is examined. The hypothesis originated with evidence from two exploratory experimental sets on an oncogenic virus and was substantiated by including evidence from three additional experimental sets. Collectively these sets comprise an experimental series and the accumulative evidence from the series was adequate to justify the hypothesis (...) by persuading the virology community of its veracity. In this paper I follow Ted Nannicelli in the project of establishing boundaries of television works. I focus on serialized television works pertaining to a particular genre and I set out to provide an account of their identity. My claim is that external identity of such works is determined by their specific genre-affiliation, given the way in which generic norms determine the content of the series, namely, its characteristic storylines and regular set of characters. From the internal perspective, a series’ (...) identity is determined by the particular way in which it implements abstract generic norms. I describe the process of such implementation as creation of series-specific formulaic patterns, and I analyze different layers of works where such patterns are evident. My central claim is that series-specific formulaic patterns create a coherent set of norms which, through repeated instantiation in the series’ episodes, become associated with that particular series. The function of this set is to establish the series’ boundaries, and to maintain its identity when different modifications to the patterns are made. (shrink)

McTaggart famously introduced the A- and B-series as rival metaphysical accounts of time. This paper shall reorient the debate over the original distinction. Instead of treating the series as competing theories about the nature of time, it will be argued that they are different viewpoints on a world that is fundamentally physical. To that end, non-reductive physicalism is proposed to reconcile the series.

In the section of the Antinomy of pure Reason Kant presents three notions of infinity. By investigating these concepts of infinity, this paper highlights important ‘building blocks’ of the structure of the mathematical antinomies, such as the ability of reason of producing ascending and descending series, as well as the notions of given and givable series. These structural features are discussed in order to clarify Ernst Zermelo’s reading of Kant’s antinomy, according to which the latter is deeply rooted in the (...) tendency of the mind of producing “creative progress” and “inclusive closure”. The aim of this paper is to explain in which sense and why Kant’s treatment of the antinomies attracts the attention of Zermelo in the early 1900s and which aspects of his second axiomatic system have been inspired by Kant’s philosophy. Thus, by reading Kant’s antinomy ‘through Zermelo’s eyes’—with emphasis on the concept of regressive series in indefinitum and on that of regressive series ad infinitum – this paper identifies the echoes of Kant’s work in the making of the ZFC set theory.
